Text Box: St. Matthew's Church History
In 1779, dedicated German Lutheran and Reformed Christians built a log edifice on land donated by Abraham Schmidt. As the area responded to the call of growth and expansion, it became obvious that the log based church was not going to be able to continue to serve the needs of the growing congregation. So, in 1842, a two-story stone structure replaced the original log building.

Then in 1900, the present church replaced the older stone sanctuary. Through the years, up until 1975, St. Matthew's continued as a Union Church and each congregation held its own services and called its own Pastor. In the years prior to 1975, both congregations were part of multiple charges. Then in 1975, a study was ordered to resolve the union resulting in the two congregations joining forces in affiliation with the United Church of Christ. In 1985, church members recognized the need for additional space to house the secretary and pastor's offices. Construction of this addition was accomplished entirely by donations from the church membership.
